Red Eye Correction

ColorBender red eye correction takes just 2 clicks, can be done at any time and takes less than 3 seconds for each pair of eyes.

How to correct red eye

Simply click the mouse in the vicinity of each eye within 3 seconds, and ColorBender automatically locates the centers of the eyes and removes the red while preserving highlights and non-red colors. This can be repeated until all the red eye pairs have been selected and corrected.

Operating Details

The red eye detection algorithm is activated whenever the image is clicked twice within 3 seconds at different locations. The number on the right of the red eye controls records the total number of eye pairs that have been selected. For this example, one set of eye pairs have been selected.

If the pupils are not identified with sufficient confidence, red eye correction is not applied, but the locations that were clicked are saved. These can then be edited using the Eye Edits Window described below. In this case, the eye pair total counter shows red instead of black. For this example, six eye pairs have been selected, and the last pair were not automatically corrected.

Advanced Red Eye Editing

If you want to review or manually apply red eye correction, open the Eye Edits Window. This can be done by pressing the button on the Red Eyes Control (it will be shown blue when the Window is open), by selecting the Menu View/Red Eye Editor or by pressing the "command-R" key.

If the red eye algorithm was successful, the cross hairs will be centered over the pupils and the buttons on the right will be set to "Fix Both Eyes." Otherwise, the cross hairs will not be centered and the buttons on the right will be set to "Do Nothing."

To manually apply red eye correction, click the exact center of each pupil in the Eye Edit Window within 3 seconds. This can be repeated until each cross hair is exactly centered over each pupil. Next, use the buttons to select which eyes to fix.

If the size of the pupil is larger or smaller than estimated, the slider can be used to adjust the diameter of the circular pupil mask.

Managing Red Eye Pairs

All selected red eyes can be easily reviewed using the management popup menu. This menu is selected with the small triangle in the lower right hand corner of the Eye Edit Window. As the red eye pairs are reviewed, each one can be readjusted for position and size if necessary.

The Red Eye Management Popup Menu operations are similar to the other ColorBender object management operations.

If a new red eye point is close to a previous red eye point one of two things happens

  1. If the eyes have not been corrected, the old points are discarded and the new points used.
  2. If the eyes have been corrected, then the following alert gives the user the choice of using the new points or keeping the old points.

ColorBender Technology for Red Eye

For those interested, the ColorBender technology is as follows. ColorBender uses a model of the pupil, iris and sclera and machine vision algorithms to locate the center of the pupils. After locating the pupil center, the eye separation distance is computed and the pupil diameter is estimated. A circular soft edge mask is constructed and placed over each pupil to define the region to be corrected. This algorithm is not simply replacing color while preserving saturation and brightness. The red component is suppressed while preserving the underlying color and highlights. ColorBender red eye correction is resolution independent and does not alter the source image bit map.
